Did you see me on TV --- Showing people how to make vintage Photograms?

Good Day Sacramento Interviewing Me for the Cyanotype Scarf Workshop!
I recently did a cyanotype scarf workshop and the local news station featured it on their morning program! Here’s the link to the video of the segment. It was fun trying to get people hooked on photograms and the idea of photography without cameras.

Exposing the fabric cyanotype print. Feeling like Anna Atkins but without the poofy Victorian skirt.

Reporter, Cambi Brown, helping me bring in the exposed cyanotype scarf.

On air with reporter, Cambi Brown as I'm just about to dunk the cyanotype scarf into development.
The reporter, Cambi Brown and cameraman, Scott were really nice and we had a lot of fun with it all.

Check it out for a good giggle.

Cheers,
Kate

the radishes are coming, the radishes are coming!

planted just before it got cold, tumbled by the squirrels and forgotten by us. they're finally growing into an edible size, even the ones I thinned and replanted. I love it when seeds work, despite us humans planting them at the wrong-ish time and not watering them. Look how long the tap root is!

strange beauty

It's a little hairy, definitely dirt laden and a super strange, pokey form. Little red seeds fall out and I'm finding them all over town. I think these are magnolia pods and very likable.

winter berries

these little berries grace my side fence. i love how the blue color contrasts with the reddish branches. not sure what they are but they remind me of the pokeberries that we used to make paw prints for our cats when i was a kid.

mulberry leaf attack

these gigantic fruitless mulberry leaves are taking over the lawn. it's a full-on assault; the smothering has begun.

Plums past

I could smell these before I saw them and I was glad they hadn't been cleaned up before the visitors came. As it should be, around every corner there was a surprise.

camouflage in red

maple leaves hid my foot while i was shooting. it was a delightfully unexpected camo pattern.

one red, a gazillion green

this was the last big haul of tomatoes and they were GOOD. the yellow ones are actually over ripe "green" tomatoes which were tasty and a good producer. i managed to slow roast and freeze a few batches to enjoy on a nice winter day when we need to remember what summer is all about.

when i first moved to california i saw trucks hauling two long, connected loads of tomatoes through the central valley. the visual struck me as art and it is still an amazing sight to see. -it would be great on travel bingo cards.

radish going to seed

rainbow pink chard

sage blooms

i just saw this 60 minutes clip on alice waters (via designsponge's guest blog) and it really made me want to go to chez panisse in berkeley. since that's a little bit of a hike, my yard will have to do. so, i'm posting pics of my edible garden. it's that time of year where tomato plants will soon be replacing chard and fava beans but but it's been a fun second winter garden. an upshot of the mild winter here is that certain plants survived without issue. the sage actually is blooming! —something i've never seen. the arugula is blooming too and i'd plant it again just to see those sweet spring flowers. anyhow, go eat something good. i've got some fava beans to harvest!

as a side note... fava beans were the only bean eaten in europe until the discovery of the new world and all of its legumes. crazy, right?
